飛騨街道の木曽福島（現. 木曽町福島）より開田村（現木曽町開田. 高原）への玄関口にあたります。
地蔵峠は、かつての木曽福島方面から開田高原への難所。古くは武田信玄軍がこの峠を越えて駿河に攻め入ったとされます。
